Automating contingency planning to improve response times and decision-making for Network Rail.
The Challenge
Network Rail's process for managing contingency plans during major incidents is manual and inefficient. This approach often leads to delays in implementing plans and challenges in reviewing their effectiveness afterwards.
Our Solution
An overview of what Trackbase delivered.
Technical demonstrator
A technical demonstrator, showing how the implementation of different contingency plans can be automatically evaluated based on historical train journey modification data from various sources.
Analysis report & next steps
A report providing all relevant technical details regarding the demonstrator and answers key questions about feasibility, including full user designs for a potential solution for use by controllers.
The Results
By utilising our specialist rail data and consulting skills, we were able to prove conclusively that contingency plan adherence can be measured using train event data, both historically and in real-time.
This ‘proof-of-concept’ has allowed Network Rail to both improve some of their existing contingency plan implementations, as well as plan for a solution to be used by controllers in the future to improve the implementation of plans.
